The Future of Hong Kong at Crossroads

In 1997, Hong Kong was handed back to China under an 1984 agreement giving it “a high degree of autonomy, except in foreign and defence affairs” for 50 years. However, due to Beijing’s recent decision to prescreen candidates for the 2017 elections, the landmark “One country, two systems” scheme for Hong Kong is now at risk of collapse. Due to this controversial decision, there have been wide pro-democratic protests that began with a week-long boycott of classes by students. The Hong Kong police have come under fire due to their use of tear gas and pepper spray to pacify the protesters on Sunday. Protest leaders have informed the demonstrators to retreat if rubber bullets are used against them. Now the economic and political future of Hong Kong seems more uncertain than ever.
