Title: Watch Oscar-winning film "The Reader" (2008) with us this Thursday!

Content:
Dear CSSA-UCLA members,

This Thursday night (May 7), CSSA-UCLA cordially invites you to watch a wonderfully performed, thought-provoking and morally complex film -- "The Reader" (2008) -- with us! Based on the New York Times bestselling novel and semi-autobiography by German law professor and judge Bernhard Schlink, this film adaptation was nominated for 5 Academy Awards in 2009, including Best Picture, and Kate Winslet won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her stunning performance as Hannah Schmitz.

This film raises many moral ambiguities that do not give the audience any easy answers and will make you contemplate about human nature. You will be watching two very vivid characters living in post-Nazi Germany who are undoubtedly guilty of their sins--their unconventional love affair, war crimes and shameful actions to conceal their secrets, but at the same time they are multi-layered real people, always fascinating and human. For synopsis, please see the Movie Facts section below.

Eight years later, Michael, now a young law student observing Nazi war trials, meets his former lover again, under very different circumstances. Hanna is on trial for a hideous crime, and as she refuses to defend herself, Michael gradually realizes his boyhood love may be guarding a secret she considers to be more shameful than murder."
