In the last decade China has experienced the fastest growth in GDP per capita of any major economy in human history, with an annual average growth rate of 9.9 percent. This is nearly five times the GDP per capita growth rate of the United States, the longtime global superpower. Nonetheless, China experts question the sustainability of Chinese economic growth. The 2012 China Development Forum: ‘China’s Reform Phase II’, considered the multi-faceted nature of China’s ongoing reform amidst domestic tensions and international economic turmoil. In 2013 we will focus on China’s development in the context of important changes in the Chinese political landscape.

November 2012 saw the once-in-a-decade power transfer in the 18th National Congress. How will the new leader address the many challenges currently confronting China: a distorted market; rising social pressures; international diplomatic conflict; and escalating geopolitical tension? With a comprehensive, in-depth examination of China’s current challenges and future opportunities in international relations, urbanization, legal reform, educational changes, growing soft power and business, economic and financial outlooks, we present you the 2013 China Development Forum: ‘China in Transition’.
