Title: The nomenklatura system and the governance of China's large centrally-controlled enterprises “名单体制”及中国大型央企的管理

Despite many predictions of comprehensive privatization, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has managed to sustain a vast state-controlled industrial system since the early 1990s. At the core of this system is a batch of large business groups and financial institutions directly controlled by the central state (labeled here as large centrally-controlled enterprises/large CCEs). This talk discusses the relations between the party, the state and large CCEs in China by examining how the nomenklatura system has served as the Party's adaptive 'visible hand' in governing large CCEs under the new circumstances of market oriented reform and opening up.

Title: The political capital of Chinese firms and its impact on their

performance: study of publically listed small-and-medium sized enterprises

The development of Chinese small-and-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) is subject to the gradual economic reform that China’s central government has been promoting since late 1970s. During the economic reform, market is allowed to grow as the planning system continues to operate. This unique feature of China’s economic reform has set a big challenge for Chinese SMEs that are mostly owned by private entrepreneurs. What are their strategies to thrive in a market where most assets are still owned by state? At the forum, I will be presenting the findings to this question that I have got under current study.

3)Wan, Li 万励

PhD in architecture, University of Cambridge

Title: Architecture of the City You may not realize that the urban space we live in follows some underlying patterns. These distinctive patterns affect our living in unique and significant ways. In this talk,I would like to offer some insights into two questions: 1) What is architecture and what is city; 2) How we perceive cities from a spatial perspective.

4)Cheng, Tsu-Jui

PhD candidate, Accessibility Research Group, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, UCL

Stumbling in later life: The impact of the built environment on older pedestrians

Falls are one of the major physical health problems among older people but to date we know very little about environmental risk factors of outdoor falls on the pavement. As the world population is ageing, accessible pedestrian environment is becoming an emerging issue, and therefore understanding effects of the pedestrian environment on walking behaviour will help us eliminate environmental hazards for falling and encourage active ageing.
