Keynes Hall, King’s College

(1) Dr. Kai Ruggeri, Research Associate, Engineering Design Centre,
University of Cambridge
(2) Xiaofei Shi, PhD Student, Faculty of Education, University of
Cambridge

Established in 2009, the Europe China Image Film Festival is not only
the largest Chinese film festival in Europe, but also one of the most
influential overseas Chinese film festivals and the most anticipated
Chinese theme events. In the past five years, with “China Image, Move
the World” as the goal, we have been striving to provide the outstanding
contemporary Chinese films with an international platform opening to the
world audience, and particularly facilitating the significant
communicatio between up-and-coming Chinese filmmakers and the world.
Hosted annually in autumn in London, the global fashion and creative
cultural capital, ECIFF consistently features the best representative
Chinese films of the year for overseas audience. With the power of the
new media, we explore new channels to welcome a wider viewing by the
whole world and boost Chinese film export in a sustainable manner.

As a platform for overseas promotion of Chinese films and cultural
communication between the UK and China, ECIFF has generated support from
The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SAFRT) and
Chinese Embassy in the UK. The 6th Europe China Image Film Festival is
jointly organised by the China-UK Culture and Creative Industry
Association (CCA) and China Film Producers' Association. Our festival
aims to promote Chinese film culture to Europe, integrate the Chinese
culture and economic, and gear the Chinese culture to international
convention. Main events this year include judging and screenings of a
selection of excellent Chinese films, micro-films and minority sessions,
ECIFF Film Market, The Film Conference, Creative and Cultural Industries
Forum, China European Co-operation and Co-production Forum, and the
Awarding Ceremony.

This year, we will continue to focus on promoting new generation films

Topic 1: Psychology and Policy: Brussels to Beijing

The role of psychologists in policymaking has grown considerably in the
past ten years. Among the many positives of this development is the
direct link of individual outcomes to influencing health, economic and
public policies. However, this approach is mostly seen in Europe and
North America, and is by far from standardised. This talk will present
the interesting areas in which psychologists are engaged in advising
public and business leaders through their research as well as discuss
better approaches in new regions. Topics will include access to health
care, single parent employment, innovation and education policies.

Topic 2: Context-dependent Crossover: A Case Study of the Reception of
Jimmy Liao’s The Sound of Colors and When the Moon Forgot in the
English-speaking Market

This paper examines the crossover phenomenon in two of Jimmy Liao’s
picturebooks and their English translations: The Sound of Colors and
When the Moon Forgot, focusing on how the texts’ potential to
facilitate readers’ transgression of socially prescribed reading
categories relates to a specific social, economic, cultural context, and
what are the implications of my case study of a particular author’s work
for crossover theory more generally. Crossover here designates that a
text evokes both the child readership and the adult readership. It is
argued: as the expectation of and the demand put on the child reader
vary in different social, economic, cultural contexts, a text’s
crossover appeal is context-dependent; the significance of a specific
context comes to the fore when a text is transplanted from one context
into another; therefore crossover relates to a crossing of age
boundaries, and more importantly, cultural boundaries.
